The COVID-19 pandemic forever changed the landscape of education. From the immediate shift to online learning at the height of the pandemic to a drastically slow return to the traditional classroom learning environment, education in the traditional sense changed forever. While the pandemic stands at the forefront of nationwide events impacting education, there was also an increased need to provide a safe environment for students in light of the multiple school shootings throughout the country.
Understandably, children’s safety is the primary concern. School administrators and educators were challenged to ensure students were safe from the spread of COVID-19 while also keeping them safe from unsuspecting dangers occurring when shooters enter schools with the intent of harming as many people as possible. In the midst of ensuring the safety of children, teachers were expected to provide instruction to prepare children for college and beyond.
To address concerns and procedures associated with the COVID-19 virus and student safety, many of the professional development opportunities are now focused on safety and have lost their true purpose.
